Join us on a wee stroll down the memory lane and Market Street, St Andrews!

Following our feature about Skye Candles Edinburgh shop, we will be staying on the East Coast, and tell you a little bit more about our shop on 123 Market Street – a cute address for our cute small town shop in St Andrews. And though the town might me wee in size, it’s certainly not wee in significance, especially when it comes to history, culture and tradition.

When we say St Andrews, the first two things that come to mind are golf with the Old Course, and the university. Both institution date back to the 15th century, but continue to stay relevant and significant today. The Old Course hosted the 150th Open Championship, one of the biggest golfing events, just last year. Not bad, for a town of 18.7K people.
The university is known for its academic excellence, but culturally it is also well known as the place where Prince William met his wife, Kate Middleton.  Both institutions are also famous for being one of the firsts – the first university in Scotland, and the oldest golf course in the world! For this post we decided to keep the theme of exploring the ‘history’, and dug up our old notes and pictures from the opening day. It might not go as far as the medieval times, but it still feels like quite a trip.

We first open our shop in April 2015, taking over the prime Market street spot from what used to be a health store. Our then bright blue store has quickly found its place in the community, with the lovely locals, as well as uni students looking to brighten up their accommodation with our reed diffusers and, of course, the town visitors coming the St Andrews for a holiday.
“We’re always incredibly excited about taking our business to new places. St. Andrews is definitely one of the most popular places to visit in Scotland. It attracts visitors from all over the world, and it is just a great opportunity to approach the tourist market and give them a little taste of Skye and Scotland” said James in our press release for the opening.
Taking a stroll down the memory lane, we realised that the opening of the shop was connected with the launch of our Scottish Collection. It’s hard to believe that there was a time when these weren’t a part of our range. Back then, we started with just the four scents, representing the four seasons on Skye.
Much like the Scottish Collection product packaging, our shop eventually got a make-over too. Nowadays the shop matches with all the other locations, in a sleek black colour scheme, leaving the room for our bright beautiful products to pop. We did however preserved the boutique character of the unit, fitting in the St. Andrews atmosphere and a variety of quaint shops, charming cafes, and traditional Scottish pubs, as well as ever.
The Scottish Collection we mentioned earlier got a make over since its early days too. And doubled in size. With more exciting updates to come, but we’ll get into later!
