Handmade & Sustainable - how we make our candles?

How we make our candles

When we talk about our scented candles, we usually focus on the scented aspect - what inspires our fragrances, what attributes and benefits our fragrances have, what occasion they fit…Today we will focus on the ‘candles’ part. You might have heard us talk, once or twice, about the candles being handmade and made from sustainable ingredients. But do you know how and why?

How candles are made
Our formula is quite simple - natural soya wax and the essential or fragrance oil. We opted for soya wax for its qualities in respect to fragrance release. Since soya wax melts at a lower temperature, soy based candles are the optimal vessel for home fragrancing. Not only they burn cleaner, they also last significantly longer than their paraffin alternatives of the same size. Additionally, compared to theses more traditional petroleum-based paraffin candles, soya wax is also plant based and therefore a lot mure sustainable. Our wax of choice is derived from ethically sourced American grown soya, primarily from Illinois and Iowa. We specifically avoid soya from South American countries where the soy plantations have been known to be amongst the causes for deforestation.

Our founder James always says that “candle making is easy to do, but difficult to master” So the not-so-secret hack to our success is the human touch. Our candles have always been and will always be hand made. Although this makes the process more labour intensive, it also means that the quality control is built into every stage of the making. Additionally, this opens up new creative opportunities for our design choices, that would be hard to code and automate in a mechanical manufacturing, but more than doable by our skilled candle makers. We will circle back to this in due time, keep your eyes peeled...

And an extra positive outcome of our approach is creating all-year-round employment opportunities in Skye. This might not sound like much, but in a place as reliant on seasonal tourism and hospitality as the Scottish islands, it does make a difference to the community.
